We are new to Baltimore (moved from Ohio in August). We live in the Roland Park area. Our son played half ice as a Mite (are they called "mites" here?) for two years in Ohio. We have been looking online at some of the hockey programs here. It looks like the closest club is at Mount Pleasant. I think it is called Baltimore Youth Hockey. I saw some other clubs that are a bit further away - Harford North Stars, and one in Columbia. Its hard to find any information about these clubs. Does anyone have any opinions that they could share? Is it too late to sign up with one of these clubs? Is there a lot of traveling involved?
Than you in advance.

All are good choices. I would pick the club most convenient for you and your family for your Mite. For Mites there is little traveling and some clubs have house leagues. Go to the CBHL website at cbhl.org and there is a lot of info and links to all the clubs. Good luck and see ya down the road!

My oldest son played hockey for all the clubs you mentioned, NewToBaltimore (we were new to Baltimore as well) - Mite cross-ice in Harford, Mite and Squirt Travel in BYH (the Baltimore Stars) and Pee Wee and now Bantam travel in Columbia (the Howard Huskies).
The Stars skate out of Mt. Pleasant and the Reisterstown Sportsplex. It's a great program to start your kid in, with a relaxed, laid-back atmosphere and great Mite coaches. The Howard Huskies are more serious, and if you are looking for AA-level play down the road, it's a great choice. The Huskies skate out of Columbia and Laurel (The Gardens Ice House). Harford is a haul (I-95 has terrible rush-hour traffic) and the atmosphere was a bit rough for my taste. One other thing to consider is the schedules. The Howard Huskies Mites practice and play three nights a week. The Baltimore Stars - only two. Depending on how busy you are and what kind of ice time you want for your kid, this could be an important issue.
Is your kid still a Mite? If so, come on down to Reisterstown tomorrow morning at 11am. The Stars are having the season kickoff party. You can meet the coaches and get registered if you like it there. Your son will need to be registered with USA Hockey for the 2014-15 season, though.
